With this, the Indian team is on a roll in its quest for a second consecutive Olympic medal. So far they have lost only against Belgium. Apart from this, the team has consistently performed well. India started their campaign in the Olympics with a win against New Zealand. India then drew against Argentina. Argentina was leading 1-0 till the end. Captain Harmanpreet leveled the match with 1.45 minutes remaining.
After the match against Argentina, the team defeated Ireland. Even in the Belgium match, the Indian team maintained its dominance throughout the match, but in the last moments, they had to lose the match 1-2. So now the team won the match against Australia.

This victory will surely heal the wounds of the Indian hockey fans after the 8-0 defeat in the final of the Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010 and 7-0 in the final of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Prior to this match, India had won only 3 out of 11 matches against Australia at the Olympics (1960 Rome quarter-final, 1964 Tokyo semi-final and 1972 Munich group match) while Australia had won six and drawn two.
