IPL 2025 Franchises Want 2 Year Ban On Foreign Players: In the background of IPL 2025, a meeting between the owners of the franchises and the BCCI saw a discussion on many issues. In this meeting, the team owners have made a big demand to BCCI’s IPL Governing Council regarding foreign players. A two-year ban should be imposed on foreign players who are unavailable for a season without any valid reason after being bought in the auction, as such players cause huge losses to franchises.
Foreign players should be banned for two years –
According to ESPN Cricinfo, all 10 franchises have given their consent on both the points in the meeting held on Wednesday. Along with that, he has demanded that the IPL Governing Council should make it mandatory for foreign players to register for the big auction. So that these players will not be able to participate in small auctions with the hope of getting big amount at their convenience. Also, IPL franchises are not happy with foreign players being unavailable due to personal reasons before the start of the season. Franchisees said this also affects their performance. Because the team’s strategy is made keeping those foreign players in mind.
Information about unavailability of players at the time of auction –
The IPL franchises said that if the board asks the players to play international cricket or if they are injured or unable to join the team due to some family work, in such cases they will allow the players. But it would be better if they know about the unavailability of players during the auction. Franchises face the problem that many a times players bought at original price withdraw their names after the auction. He also gave an example of a player, in which the player’s manager stipulated that if paid more, the player would be willing to play for that franchise.
The franchises also told the IPL Governing Council that several such incidents have taken place during the last two auctions (2018-24). When some foreign players were not available in the big auctions to fetch more money in the smaller auctions. After this he fetched huge sums in small auctions. Ishan Kishan was the highest bid in the 2022 Big Auction, with Mumbai Indians buying him for Rs 15.25 crore. After this, in the short auction for 2024, Mitchell Starc was bought by KKR for Rs 24.75 crore and Pat Cummins was bought by SRH for Rs 20.50 crore.
Some of these players and their managers try to take advantage of this system. Therefore, the franchisees said that there is a need to make some provisions to curb this. Franchisees said they can understand if a new player registers for a small auction but big players should be available for the big auction. If they are not sold, in which case they can register themselves for the next auction. Now we have to wait and see what decision the IPL Governing Council takes on these various demands.
