MUMBAI: More than a year has passed since the RBI announced to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes from circulation, but Rs 7,409 crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes have not been returned and are still in public hands, the bank said on Thursday.
Last year on May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank announced to withdraw Rs 2000 notes from circulation. After that, 97.92 percent of the notes have been deposited with the Reserve Bank by the end of July 31, 2024. The total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore as on 19 May 2023. The Reserve Bank had provided the facility of depositing or exchanging Rs 2,000 notes in all bank branches in the country till 7 October 2023.

Citizens who still have Rs 2,000 notes will be given a reserve in Mumbai, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Bank notes can be deposited or exchanged at 19 offices of the bank. Moreover, it is possible to send Rs 2000 notes to the RBI office from any post office in the country.
