There is big news regarding Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah. Jay Shah will now become the new president of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Jay Shah was the only applicant for the post of ICC Chairman and was elected unopposed. August 27 was the last date to apply for this position. At 35 years old, Jay Shah has become the youngest person to hold the post. The current ICC president, Greg Barclay, will complete his term on November 30. Barclay has served as ICC president for two consecutive terms but recently announced that he is not seeking a third term. In this context, Jay Shah’s candidacy for the presidency of the ICC, the world’s governing body for cricket, was considered very strong.
According to the ICC, Jay Shah was the sole candidate who applied for the post and has been elected unopposed as the next president. Shah is regarded as one of the most influential figures on the ICC board. He currently heads the ICC’s powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs Sub-Committee.
What did Jay Shah say after being elected ICC President?
After being elected ICC President, Jay Shah expressed his intention to further increase the reach and popularity of cricket globally. According to an ICC statement, Shah said, “I am overwhelmed to be elected as the ICC president. I am committed to working with the ICC team and our member nations to take world cricket forward. We stand at a critical juncture where balancing the co-existence of multiple formats, adopting new technologies, and introducing our flagship programs to new global markets has become essential. We aim to make cricket even more popular.”
Jay Shah added, “There needs to be more thought put into making cricket more popular around the world. The inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 shows that cricket is on the rise. I believe the sport will advance in unprecedented ways.”
