Narendra Modi on Crimes Against Women:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the National Conference of District Judiciary at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Center in Delhi on Saturday (August 31). During his speech, Modi commented on the issue of crimes against women across the country. He emphasized that victims of such crimes should receive immediate justice. Modi stated, “If any crime against women is committed anywhere, and women receive prompt justice in those cases, it will boost their confidence in women’s safety. The judiciary is responsible for upholding the Constitution, and the Supreme Court and Indian Judiciary have so far fulfilled this responsibility effectively.”
Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Chandrachud and senior legal practitioner Kapil Sibal were also present at the event. In front of the Chief Justice, Prime Minister Modi remarked, “Citizens of India have never shown distrust towards the Supreme Court.” He referred to the emergency era as a ‘dark period’ and highlighted the judiciary’s critical role in upholding fundamental rights.
Comments on Kolkata and Badlapur Cases:
Modi also addressed national security issues, stating, “Our judiciary has so far protected national integrity by prioritizing national interests.” Regarding the rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata and the incidents of sexual abuse of schoolgirls in Badlapur (Thane), Modi said, “Violence against women and the safety of children are serious issues for our society.”
Immediate Justice for Women:
Modi emphasized that timely justice in cases of violence against women will strengthen public trust in the judiciary. He noted that half of the country’s population (women) would feel safer if prompt justice is ensured. While India has strict laws against violence and other crimes, Modi stressed the need for better coordination within the criminal justice system for swift justice.
Regarding the Kolkata case, where a young doctor was raped and murdered at the Kar Medical College and Government Hospital, the Kolkata Police initially investigated the matter. The case has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. This case has heated the political atmosphere across the country, with the BJP and Trinamool Congress accusing each other over the incident and the investigations conducted so far.
