In Rajasthan’s Tonk district, a tense incident unfolded during the recent by-elections in the Deoli-Uniyara constituency. Independent candidate Naresh Meena, running for election, reportedly assaulted Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary following a dispute over local issues in Samrawata village. Villagers there had boycotted the election, frustrated with the government’s decision to reassign their village from the Uniyara sub-district to the Deoli sub-district, a move they felt ignored their longstanding demand to remain under Uniyara’s jurisdiction.
Efforts by the local administration to resolve the boycott led to an intense standoff. During an attempt by officials to negotiate with villagers, Meena intervened, resulting in an argument with SDM Chaudhary. The confrontation quickly escalated, leading Meena to physically assault Chaudhary. Police officers at the scene separated the two, and Meena was subsequently detained.
The tension intensified as Meena’s supporters protested the arrest by burning tires on the road and obstructing the police. Reports indicate multiple fires were set around Samrawata, heightening unrest. Ajmer’s Inspector General of Police, Om Prakash, confirmed that over 60 individuals involved in the violence were arrested.
