Three Steps to Take After Receiving a Scam Call: In 2024, the number of scam calls (spam calls) and scam messages has been increasing day by day. From offering work-from-home jobs to masquerading as delivery agents, scammers steal your personal or sensitive information. The main aim of these scammers is to steal your money and digital identity. Even if you realize you’re being scammed, your work doesn’t end there. To secure your account and prevent future fraud, follow these three steps:
1. Report the Number: Blocking the scammer’s phone number prevents them from contacting you directly. However, to help protect others from these scammers, you should report the number as well. Caller ID apps like Truecaller allow you to mark the number as a ‘scam.’ Use their reporting feature to flag the number. Platforms like SMS and WhatsApp also allow reporting suspicious numbers. By doing so, you help make the digital ecosystem safer for everyone.
2. Stay Alert and Monitor Your Account: If you receive a spam call or SMS, it’s best not to engage in conversation. Stay vigilant and monitor your financial accounts and digital activity for any unusual behavior. If you suspect anything suspicious, contact your bank or the respective service provider immediately. If you think someone has your credit/debit card information, change its password immediately. If any suspicious activity is detected, cancel the credit/debit card and get a new one. By taking these steps, the information the scammer has will be of no use to them.
3. Change Your Password: If a scammer tries to send an OTP or gain access to your Amazon or Facebook account, change your account password immediately. Also, log out of all devices where you’re logged in. You can log in again using the new password if necessary.
If you haven’t set up two-factor authentication for your account, now is a good time to do so. Instead of relying on a company’s default service, set up an OTP or use an authentication app. This way, even if a scammer obtains your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the one-time password.
