New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Sambhal caused a major uproar on Wednesday. A convoy of Congress leaders heading to violence-hit Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh was intercepted at the Ghazipur border, approximately 30 km from Parliament. After unsuccessful attempts by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to breach the police blockade, the BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of engaging in a publicity stunt.
The obstruction of Congress leaders was also raised in both Houses of Parliament. Congress members staged a walkout, protesting the actions of the Central Government and the Uttar Pradesh Government. Tensions remain high in Sambhal following violence linked to the survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid. Rahul Gandhi had planned to visit Sambhal to meet the victims’ families.
Criticism and Support for the Visit
Discussions about the violence in Sambhal were held in Parliament. The Samajwadi Party (SP) criticized Congress leaders for allegedly treating the matter as a mere formality. SP Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav accused Congress of not taking the issue seriously, despite Rahul Gandhi’s announcement of his visit. However, SP president Akhilesh Yadav supported Rahul Gandhi and criticized the BJP’s stance, questioning the claim that his visit could disrupt law and order.
BJP’s Criticism
BJP National Spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi accused Congress of exploiting the incident to bolster the ‘INDIA’ alliance, which he claimed was on the brink of collapse. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi expressed concerns that Rahul Gandhi’s visit could exacerbate the sensitive situation in Sambhal, leading to restrictions on outsiders entering the area.
Rahul Gandhi’s Response
Rahul Gandhi defended his right to visit the affected area as the Leader of the Opposition, stating:
“I am ready to go alone or with the police. However, neither option was accepted.”
