Canadian Official Counteroffer to Donald Trump
Newly elected US President Donald Trump has adopted an aggressive stance toward Canada, creating a stir with his statement about making Canada the 51st state of the United States. In response, a senior Canadian official has issued a bold counteroffer, suggesting Canada buy two American states instead.
Trump has recently criticized Canada and even threatened to use economic measures to integrate it as the 51st state of the US. Ontario Premier Doug Ford addressed these remarks on Monday. When asked about Trump’s comments regarding the merger of Canada, Ford said, “President, I will make a counteroffer. What if we buy Alaska? And we include Minnesota and Minneapolis in it?”
He added, “You know that’s not true. I know they like to make these statements and jokes, but I take it seriously. They may be joking, but this would never happen under my watch.”
Trudeau Resignation Fuels Speculation
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has recently resigned as leader of the ruling party and, consequently, as prime minister, following months of internal party opposition. In the wake of his resignation, Donald Trump took to Truth Social, making a controversial statement about Canada’s supposed “disintegration.”
What Did Trump Say?
In his post on Truth Social, Trump claimed:
“Many people in Canada would like to become the 51st state. The United States can no longer afford the massive trade deficits and subsidies needed to keep Canada from sinking. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned. If Canada were to merge with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would be greatly reduced, and they would be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships. What a great nation they would be once united.”
When asked if he would consider using military force to compel Canada’s integration, Trump stated he would rely on “economic force” instead. Adding to the controversy, Trump shared a map depicting Canada as part of the United States, captioning the image: “Oh Canada!”
