Yuvraj Singh’s Message to Abhishek Sharma After His Record-Breaking Century
In the fifth T20 match against England at Wankhede Stadium, India’s T20 opener Abhishek Sharma delivered a spectacular performance, scoring a stunning 135 runs, the highest individual score by an Indian in T20 Internationals. Following this incredible innings, he received praise from all corners, including his mentor Yuvraj Singh, who not only applauded his performance but also gave him some crucial advice through a personal message.
Yuvraj Singh’s Advice to Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek’s father, Raj Kumar Sharma, shared that Yuvraj messaged Abhishek after his century, saying:
“You still have a long way to go, but never forget that personal success should never come before the team. The team should always come first. I want you to keep playing like this—work hard, but play smart.”
He also revealed that Yuvraj wants Abhishek to represent India in all three formats of the game, which is why he constantly advises him to rotate the strike and play according to the situation.
Yuvraj’s Instagram Post & Training Advice
On September 4, Yuvraj Singh posted a video on Instagram to wish Abhishek Sharma on his birthday. The caption read:
“This year, I hope you score as many runs as you send out for sixes.”
In the video, Yuvraj is seen getting slightly frustrated as Abhishek tries to hit a six on every ball. Yuvraj tells him, “Hey, take a single too.” When Abhishek continues to go for big shots, Yuvraj, in Punjabi, jokingly says, “You won’t improve, you just hit big sixes.”
Abhishek’s father further explained Yuvraj’s emphasis on strike rotation:
“Yuvraj Singh has often told him to focus on taking singles and rotating the strike. But Abhishek replied, ‘Paji, when I see the ball, I feel like I can hit a six or a four every time. If I can hit a six, why should I take just one run?’ But Yuvraj insists that if he wants to play in all three formats, he must learn to rotate the strike and adapt to different situations.”
Abhishek Sharma’s Record-Breaking Innings
Yuvraj’s mentorship was evident in Abhishek’s innings against England, where he showcased both explosive hitting and smart strike rotation against one of the best bowling attacks.
- He reached his half-century in just 17 balls.
- He completed his century in just 37 balls.
- He held his ground even as wickets fell at the other end.
- His final score: 135 runs off 54 balls, including 13 sixes, 19 singles, and five doubles.
- His 13 sixes set a new record for the most sixes by an Indian in a T20 International match.
Abhishek Sharma’s innings at Wankhede Stadium proved that he is not just a power hitter but also a player capable of adapting his game to different situations—a lesson well instilled by Yuvraj Singh.
