Airtel Tariff Hike 2025: Higher Mobile Charges Expected, Hints CEO Gopal Vittal
A few days ago, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) directed all telecom operators to introduce voice and SMS-only tariff plans to ensure that users who don’t require data services don’t have to pay extra. In response, major telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vi were urged to roll out calling + SMS-only recharge plans.
However, amid this development, Airtel users may face an increase in mobile service charges, as suggested by Bharti Airtel’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Gopal Vittal.
Airtel Hints at Another Tariff Hike
Airtel recently raised mobile service charges, leading to a record Average Revenue Per User (ARPU). The company now indicates that further price hikes may be necessary for financial sustainability. Speaking after the company’s quarterly results, Gopal Vittal hinted that mobile tariffs could increase again in the near future.
“We need to increase service charges further to maintain financial stability in the coming months,” he stated.
Airtel is reducing network investment, but the company remains focused on expanding transmission capacity, enhancing customer experience, and growing domestic broadband services.
Why Airtel is Increasing Tariffs
- Lower Network Investment: Airtel’s capital expenditure for 2025 and 2026 is expected to be lower than in 2024.
- Focus on Digital Capabilities: The company’s investments in digital infrastructure are yielding positive results.
- Low ARPU in India: Compared to global standards, India’s ARPU remains one of the lowest, affecting telecom profitability.
“Further rate revisions are needed for the industry to stay financially stable and generate sustainable returns,” Vittal emphasized.
What This Means for Airtel Users
While TRAI’s directive aims to offer affordable voice and SMS-only plans, Airtel’s possible tariff hike could mean higher mobile service costs for users in the near future. Customers should keep an eye on upcoming announcements to understand how these changes will impact their mobile expenses.
