Amitabh Bachchan Reflects on ‘Kaala Patthar’ and Family Memories on KBC
Amitabh Bachchan, currently hosting the popular show Kaun Banega Crorepati, often shares personal anecdotes with the contestants. However, in a recent episode, a contestant brought up an interesting story about Big B himself. The story, mentioned in Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s book, relates to the shooting of the 1979 film Kaala Patthar.
The film, produced and directed by Yash Chopra, was inspired by the Chasnala coal mine disaster near Dhanbad, which claimed 375 lives. Contestant Kaushalendra, who works in a coal mine in Dhanbad, shared his experience and recounted an incident from the film’s shooting. He said, “During the filming of Kaala Patthar, contaminated water was sprayed on you to recreate the disaster scene. I read that you fell ill because of this, but you continued shooting regardless. This incident is well-known in our region, and your father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, also mentioned it in his book.”
Amitabh Bachchan confirmed the story, reminiscing about the bond he shared with his late father. Harivansh Rai Bachchan had also written about a family ritual in his book. The contestant added, “Your father mentioned that your family always sat together for dinner, and you always sat at the dining table facing north. He believed that facing north leads to finding the truth. He also wrote that he once said to you, ‘I need truth, and you need a long life.’ You replied, ‘I do not want long life at the price of truth.’”
Acknowledging the story, Big B shared his father’s wisdom: “My father always said I should live a long life, and that was enough for him.”
The audience is now eagerly awaiting Amitabh Bachchan’s next film appearance, as his stories continue to captivate viewers on Kaun Banega Crorepati.
