The Jaisalmer Incident: “It Was Like a Scene from Lagaan”
Director Apoorva Lakhia recently shared an anecdote in an interview with Friday Talkies. He said, “We were shooting for the film Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost in Jaisalmer, which was experiencing a severe drought at the time. Abhishek Bachchan was working on this film, and Amitabh Bachchan had arrived with his family to meet him for the New Year celebrations. Jaya Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan, and Amar Singh were also present.”
He continued, “We were shooting in the desert when we noticed a convoy arriving from a distance. As their vehicles approached, dark clouds began gathering in the sky. Amitabh Bachchan stepped out of the car and hugged Abhishek—and at that very moment, a hailstorm started. It felt like a scene straight out of Lagaan! Soon, heavy rains followed, the rivers overflowed, and some villages even suffered damage.”
Locals Believed Amitabh Bachchan Was Divine
Lakhia further recalled, “After the rain, a massive crowd of 40,000–50,000 people gathered outside the hotel where Amitabh Bachchan was staying. The locals wanted to fall at his feet, believing that his arrival had brought rain and filled the rivers with water. It was as if God had come in the form of Amitabh Bachchan. Even if it was just a coincidence, witnessing it was truly a surreal experience.”
