Apple iPads Production In India: As a result of the central government’s plans for powerful companies to set up production centers in India, it is understood that Apple is preparing to resume production of iPads in India in the coming months. This was reported by Moneycontrol quoting company sources (on request of anonymity). According to Money Control, earlier Apple tried to partner with China’s BYD to manufacture iPads in India but the central government imposed restrictions due to the political tension between China and India. As this attempt failed, Apple is now likely to start the process of finding a manufacturing partner in India itself.
A senior government official told Moneycontrol on condition of anonymity, “BYD was ready to set up an iPad manufacturing plant in India but there was a clearance issue and now the situation has changed. We are now helping Apple with a view to making further progress in India over the next two-three years. This will also lead to a significant increase in production.”
Apple shared big plans
The government wants Apple to start manufacturing laptops and desktops in India in the next few years. The official said that Apple has shared with the government some ‘big plans’ that could be implemented in India in the next 2-3 years. They want to create an alternative supply chain in India. Ghee will bring more partners to India and existing partners will further enhance their capabilities. Last year, Apple started its iPad production in Vietnam with BYD due to difficulties in getting approval to start iPad manufacturing operations in India.
Apple’s focus on Pune!
Along with expanding iPhone production capacity in India, Apple is also currently working with Jabil Inc to expand the production of AirPods wireless charging case parts in India. For your information, Jabil Inc is an American multinational contract manufacturing company, which manufactures 4G and 5G equipment for Sweden’s Ericsson. Currently, Apple plans to start production of TWS (True Wireless Stereo), AirPods in India early next year. For this, Apple has started manufacturing (test) parts of wireless charging cases with Jabil in Pune. Production testing may also be done with Foxconn in the near future.
Apple and Tata is a powerful combo!
After the iPhone, iPods are Apple’s leading product in the TWS (True Wireless Stereo) market globally. Apple has increased local production of its flagship iPhone devices in India through Foxconn and Tata Electronics. The Tata company had taken over Wistron operations for this and now the process of adding Pegatron to the Tata company is underway. The deal also includes an iPhone manufacturing plant near Chennai and another project under construction.
The company aims to produce a quarter of all iPhones in India in the next three to four years, which is 14 percent of Apple’s total iPhone production, according to statistics. The company is trying to build a network of local vendors to reduce dependence on Chinese suppliers.
According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Apple exported 10 million iPhones to India in 2023, surpassing Korean rival Samsung to record record sales in India in 2023. In 2022, exports amounted to 6 million iPhones.
