The Barhi Assembly seat is one of the 81 seats in Jharkhand. This region, part of Hazaribagh district, is also included in the Hazaribagh Lok Sabha constituency. Elections have been held here since 1977, when Janata Party’s Lalita Rajya Laxmi was elected as the MLA.
Since the formation of Jharkhand in 2000, Congress has held significant sway over this seat. Out of the five elections held after the separation from Bihar, Congress has won four times. In the 2005 elections, Congress’s Manoj Yadav emerged victorious. However, in 2009, BJP interrupted Congress’s winning streak, with BJP’s Umashankar Akela winning the seat. In 2014, Congress reclaimed the seat as Manoj Kumar Yadav became the MLA for the second time. In 2019, Congress’s Umashankar Akela won again.
This Assembly constituency comprises 20 panchayats. It is rich in mineral resources and blessed with natural beauty. Most of the population resides in rural areas and is dependent on agriculture.
