After the Indian cricket team won the T20 World Cup recently, head coach Rahul Dravid announced his retirement. After that, BCCI was looking for the post of head coach. Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was interested in the post. He also gave an interview for that. Now BCCI Secretary Jai Shah has announced that Gautam Gambhir has been selected as the head coach. Gautam Gambhir’s tenure starts from July 2024. He will hold the post till December 2027. He will be the coach for Test, ODI and T20 matches.
Jai Shah posted this news on X. He said, ” I am extremely happy to announce the name of former cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Modern day cricket has changed rapidly and Gautham has been a witness to these changes. Gautham has played many roles in his career. He will continue to lead the Indian team further on the strength of his excellent performance so far. And he seems like the ideal person to do it.”
“Gautam Gambhir’s vision and vast experience make him the right candidate for the head coach position. Best wishes to Gautam Gambhir for his new journey from BCCI”, Jai Shah has welcomed Gautam Gambhir in these words.
After BCCI’s announcement, Gautam Gambhir has also given his first reaction to the decision by posting on X.
“India is my identity and serving the country is the proudest moment of my life. Even though I have a different hat on my head, I am happy to be part of the Indian team once again. My goal will continue to be to do work that makes every Indian citizen proud. The players in blue jersey carry the dream of 140 crore people on their shoulders. I will try to do whatever I can to fulfill this dream”, Gautam Gambhir expressed.
In November 2023, the Indian team lost to Australia in the final of the ODI Cricket World Cup. After this defeat, head coach Rahul Dravid announced his retirement. But after captain Rohit Sharma’s request, he agreed to remain as the coach till the T20 World Cup. On June 29, the Indian cricket team gave a great gift to head coach Rahul Dravid by winning the ICC Cup after 11 years at the ground in Barbados.
BCCI has imposed strict conditions for new coaches
- Experience of at least 30 Tests or 50 ODIs.
- OR Must have been the head coach of a Test playing country for at least two full-time years.
- or of any Associate Member Team/ of any IPL Team or of any such League or First Class Team or of any
- Three years of experience as a coach of the country’s A team.
- OR Should be a holder of Level-3 Coaching Certificate of BCCI.
- Age should be less than 60 years.
