Paris Paralympics 2024 India Medal Tally: India’s Best Performance Yet
India’s journey at the Paris Paralympics 2024 has concluded. On September 8 (Sunday), Pooja Ojha failed to qualify for the women’s KL1 200m final in the canoe sprint, marking India’s final event in this tournament. This year, India achieved its best-ever performance in Paralympic history, winning a record 29 medals. This includes 7 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze medals, placing India 18th in the overall medal standings, surpassing countries like Switzerland, South Korea, Belgium, and Argentina.
India’s performance in the Paralympics has broken all previous records. In the Tokyo Paralympics 2020, India secured 5 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals, with a total of 19 medals, finishing 24th in the rankings. This year, India excelled in athletics, securing 17 medals, including 4 golds. Para badminton followed, with 5 medals, including 1 gold. In para shooting, India claimed 4 medals, including 1 gold, while para archery earned 2 medals, with 1 gold, and para judo earned 1 bronze. India also achieved its highest-ever tally of gold medals in the Paralympics, surpassing the 5 golds won in Tokyo.
India’s first Paralympic medal came in 1972, courtesy of para-athlete Murlikant Petkar, who was recently the subject of the film Chandu Champion. At the Paris Paralympics 2024, shooter Avani Lekhara won India’s first gold medal. Other gold medalists include Nitesh Kumar (Badminton), Sumit Antil (Athletics), Harvinder Singh (Athletics), Dharambir (Athletics), Praveen Kumar (Athletics), and Navdeep Singh (Athletics).
