Maha Kumbh Mela Stampede: Uttar Pradesh STF Steps Up Investigation
The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police has intensified its investigation into the stampede that occurred at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela on Mauni Amavasya. The STF is probing whether there was any conspiracy behind the incident. As part of the investigation, the team is analyzing data from 16,000 mobile numbers that were active around Sangam Naka at the time of the incident. It has been revealed that many of these numbers have been switched off since the incident.
Mobile Numbers Switched Off Since the Incident
According to sources, data from more than 16,000 mobile numbers is being examined. Investigators have found that several numbers have remained inactive since the stampede. Suspects are being identified using a face recognition app, analyzing CCTV footage from the Command and Control Room set up in the Mahakumbh Mela area.
The Uttar Pradesh Police is on high alert ahead of the Vasant Panchami Snan. Additional security personnel have been deployed in the area to ensure safety during the third Amrit Snan, scheduled for Monday morning.
Key Bathing Dates at the Mahakumbh Mela
- Third Amrit Snan (Vasant Panchami): February 5, starting at 5 AM. The Panchayat Akhara will be the first to arrive at the Sangam Ghat at 4 AM, followed by 12 other Akharas.
- Fourth Mahasnan (Magh Purnima): February 12
- Final Snan (Mahashivratri): February 26
Stampede Incident and Aftermath
The stampede occurred between 2 AM on January 29 and 30 at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela. About 16 hours after the incident, the Mahakumbh administration confirmed that 30 devotees had died and 60 were injured.
Safety Measures for Devotees
Following the tragic event, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented strict measures to improve crowd management and ensure devotees’ safety. Key steps include:
- Vehicle Restrictions: All vehicles have been banned in the city one day before and after major bathing festivals.
- VIP Pass Cancellation: All VIP passes have been revoked to prevent congestion.
- Pontoon Bridge Access: All 40 pontoon bridges connecting the Mahakumbh Mela to the city have been opened to facilitate movement.
Previously, vehicles with valid passes were allowed entry into various camps, and VIP pass holders had access to akharas and sadhus’ tents. However, these privileges have now been revoked to prioritize safety and crowd control.
