Infosys Co-Founder Nandan Nilekani on Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing rapidly, with many human tasks now being performed with its assistance. This has led to widespread fears that AI will replace jobs in the coming years. However, Infosys Co-Founder and Chairman Nandan Nilekani has sought to alleviate these concerns with an important statement about AI.
Speaking at an event organized by the All India Management Association, Nilekani said, “No matter how useful AI is, there is no substitute for many human qualities.” He emphasized that human attributes such as empathy, leadership, cooperation, and creativity will always remain crucial. “AI cannot replace these qualities. No matter how advanced AI becomes, if five people cannot complete a task together, AI will not be able to surpass humans,” he added.
Nilekani advised people to focus on skills that remain valuable over time and are less affected by AI. “First-principle thinking is an important skill. AI is based on mechanical thinking, but it lacks the ability to fundamentally analyze and deeply understand something,” he explained.
A report by Moneycontrol highlighted Nilekani’s acknowledgment that AI will lead to job losses in certain sectors, with some jobs being automated and employment opportunities decreasing in specific industries. However, he urged people to view this transformation positively.
“Of course, AI will impact some jobs, and certain roles will be automated. However, very few sectors will see complete job losses. AI will enhance human productivity and even create new opportunities, including jobs we haven’t yet imagined,” he stated.
India AI Mission and Future Developments
Discussing India’s progress in AI, Nilekani noted that the Indian government has launched the ‘India AI Mission’ to drive AI advancements.
“In the coming years, we will witness significant changes in AI. The Indian government is taking AI seriously and has initiated the ‘India AI Mission’ to accelerate progress in this field. India’s technological and digital revolution will further strengthen its position in AI development,” he said.
AI Cannot Replace Humans
While AI is expanding across industries, Nilekani emphasized the importance of developing human capabilities alongside it. “AI cannot replace humans. On the contrary, it will make humans more capable,” he concluded.
