New Orleans Terrorist Attack Update
A horrific attack occurred in the United States on New Year’s Day, claiming the lives of 15 people. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed it as a terrorist attack. The suspect had an ISIS flag displayed on his truck, and the FBI believes he may have carried out the massacre with the help of others. The attack took place in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
The suspected attacker, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, first drove into a crowd before opening fire, killing 15 people and injuring at least 30. He was subsequently killed in a police shootout. During the investigation, authorities found an improvised explosive device (IED), guns, and other equipment in the suspect’s possession. An ISIS flag was also recovered from his vehicle.
Attacker’s Video and Motive
US President Joe Biden revealed that the FBI discovered videos posted by the attacker on social media hours before the incident. In the videos, Jabbar claimed he was inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS) group and expressed his intent to join them.
According to CNN, Jabbar also discussed personal grievances in his video, including his divorce and a prior plan to harm his family. He later abandoned that plan in favor of his attack.
The FBI suspects Jabbar did not act alone and is investigating his associates. “We are examining all aspects and are actively searching for additional suspects,” said FBI officials.
Jabbar’s Background
Public records reveal that Jabbar worked in real estate in Houston and was born in Beaumont, Texas. He served in the US Army from March 2007 to January 2015 as a human resources and IT specialist, followed by service in the Army Reserve until July 2020. He was deployed to Afghanistan between February 2009 and January 2010, retiring with the rank of staff sergeant.
Eyewitness Accounts
Witnesses described the terrifying events as they unfolded. Kevin Garcia, 22, recounted, “A white truck broke through the barricades and struck people on the sidewalk. I saw a body fly toward me, and moments later, I heard gunfire.”
