PM Modi Criticizes Arvind Kejriwal Amid Upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections
Delhi is gearing up for assembly elections in the coming weeks. In this context, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have intensified their preparations. Both parties have adopted an aggressive approach, criticizing each other in the lead-up to the polls.
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 1,600 flats and two urban redevelopment projects in the ‘Slum-Jhopri’ clusters in Delhi. During the event, the Prime Minister targeted Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, sharply criticizing the alleged extravagant spending on the official residence of the Delhi Chief Minister.
In October last year, the Delhi government’s Public Works Department revealed that high-end equipment and gadgets worth crores of rupees were installed at the Chief Minister’s residence. This revelation led to severe criticism of the AAP government by the BJP. Accusations were leveled at the AAP government for overspending on the residence. Building on this criticism, Prime Minister Modi took a swipe at Kejriwal, saying:
“I too could have built a Sheesh Mahal (glass bungalow), but the country knows very well that Modi has never built a house for himself. I have built more than 4 crore houses for the poor. Over the past 10 years, Delhi has suffered due to some very dishonest people. Individuals like Anna Hazare have pushed Delhi into a crisis. You [Kejriwal] have become a disaster, and Delhi has collapsed.”
Delhi Assembly Election Preparations
The Aam Aadmi Party, which has won the Delhi Assembly elections three times in the past 11 years, is making strong efforts to retain power. Even before the official announcement of the elections, AAP has declared its candidates for all assembly constituencies, with preparations in full swing.
On the other hand, the BJP, despite being in power in many states over the last decade, has been unable to form a government in the Delhi Assembly since Prime Minister Modi assumed office. This year, the BJP is making a robust push to win the Delhi Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the dates for the elections are yet to be announced. Despite being in an alliance with the Congress at the national level, AAP has refused to contest the Delhi Assembly elections jointly with them. This has led to a scenario where both the BJP and Congress are targeting AAP in their campaigns.
