Darbar Hall Renamed in Rashtrapati Bhawan: The issue of changing the names of some cities and roads in the country is often discussed. Political accusations and counter-accusations are also seen from it. Criticisms are also made in many matters such as what names should be given to such roads or cities, to whom they refer. However, now two of the most important halls in Rashtrapati Bhavan have been renamed. President Draupadi Murmu himself has announced this. According to Indian Express, the earlier names of these two halls were Durbar Hall and Ashok Hall.
Statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan
Durbar Hall and Ashok Hall are two of the important halls in Rashtrapati Bhavan. In this Durbar Hall, many important ceremonies like awarding of national awards are held. On the other hand special events are held in Ashok Hall. A statement has been issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan regarding changing the names of these two halls and it has been mentioned that efforts were being made in this regard. “Constant efforts are being made to ensure that the atmosphere in the Rashtrapati Bhavan is a reflection of Indian culture, values and principles,” said a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
What are the changed names?
The Durbar Hall in Rashtrapati Bhavan has now been renamed as ‘Republic Mandap’. Ashok Hall will henceforth be known as ‘Ashok Mandap’. ‘The word Durbar is primarily associated with the seat of judgment of the Indian rulers and the British. But since India became a Republic i.e. Republic, this term has been deprecated. “Republican system is rooted in the Indian social system since ancient times”, it is mentioned in this statement.
Ashok Hall was originally used as a ballroom. The word Ashoka is used in the sense of freedom from all kinds of pain. Apart from that, the name is also added to the name of Emperor Ashoka. Apart from that, the name is also associated with the Ashoka tree, which holds an important place in Indian traditions. “Renaming Ashok Hall as Ashok Mandap achieves unity of language, avoids anglicization of names and also reflects the basic principles associated with the word Ashok,” said a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan. The name of Mughal Garden has also changed!
In January last year, the famous Mughal Garden in Rashtrapati Bhavan was renamed Amrit Udyan. “On the occasion of the completion of 75 years of independence, the President has given the name Amrit Udyan to all the gardens in the Bhavan as one common name”, informed the Deputy Media Secretary to the President Navika Gupta at that time.
