RG Kar Rape and Murder Case: Main Accused Sanjay Roy Convicted
The Additional Judge of the Sealdah District and Sessions Court has convicted Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder case of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Sanjay Roy will be sentenced on Monday. This horrific incident, which occurred in Kolkata, sent shockwaves across the nation. Six months after the tragedy, the victim’s father broke down in tears in the courtroom following the conviction of the accused.
During today’s hearing, the judge stated, “We have examined all the evidence and witnesses. We have also heard the arguments from the lawyers. Based on this, it is clear that the accused is guilty and must be punished.” Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das further elaborated on the punishment: “Considering the manner in which the accused committed the crime, he can be sentenced to either death or life imprisonment. Under Section 64 of the BNS, the minimum punishment is 10 years, and under Section 66, it can extend to 25 years or life imprisonment.”
After the verdict, the victim’s father expressed his gratitude, saying, “You have justified the trust I placed in you.”
The Incident and Nationwide Outrage
The tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, stirred widespread condemnation across the country. Sanjay Roy, a volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested the day after committing the crime.
On the morning of August 9, the body of a female doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the hospital. She was found half-naked, and an autopsy revealed that she had been raped before being brutally murdered. Her body bore multiple injuries, including severe trauma to her private parts, and blood was seen flowing from her eyes. The shocking nature of the crime ignited a wave of anger and protests nationwide.
