Rohit Sharma’s Performance in BGT 2024: Irfan Pathan Questions Poor Form
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has raised concerns over Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s poor performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024. Pathan believes that if Rohit were not the captain, he might not have retained his place in the playing XI. India lost the Boxing Day Test against Australia by a massive margin of 184 runs, trailing 1-2 in the series. To tie the series, India must win the upcoming Sydney Test, starting January 3.
Questions Over Rohit Sharma’s Form
Rohit Sharma’s performance in the series has been underwhelming. Across five innings in three Test matches, he has managed to score only 31 runs, with a highest score of just 10. This string of low scores has invited criticism from cricket experts, with former pacer Irfan Pathan being among the most vocal.
What Did Irfan Pathan Say?
Speaking to Star Sports, Pathan remarked:
“For a player who has scored almost 20,000 runs, the way Rohit is struggling, it seems that his form is completely letting him down. Right now, he is playing because he is the captain. If he weren’t the captain, he wouldn’t be in the playing XI. A fixed team would have seen KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal opening, with Shubman Gill also in the lineup. Realistically, given his poor form, Rohit would not have been playing, but India needs to win the next match to tie the series. That’s why he is in the team.”
Pathan’s Criticism of Rohit’s Batting
Irfan Pathan further added:
“Rohit’s form is very poor. Even before this series, he was struggling to score runs, and the problem has persisted. Watching Rohit Sharma bat now is disappointing because he is a player I always look forward to seeing, whether in Test cricket or ODIs. But at the moment, his form, his movements, his mentality, and his coordination are completely off.”
India’s Must-Win Scenario
With the Sydney Test on the horizon, Team India faces a must-win situation to avoid losing the series. The pressure on Rohit Sharma is immense, both as a captain and as a batsman. Cricket fans and experts alike are hoping to see the “Hitman” rediscover his form and lead India to a crucial victory.
