Every day, cyber thieves come up with new tricks to rob common people. Deepfake AI technology makes such scammers even more vulnerable. A 59-year-old woman from Dahisar, Mumbai was robbed of Rs 1.2 lakh by cyber thieves. Although this number seems very small compared to the recent cyber heists, no one could have imagined the scale of the scam. Therefore, the police are appealing to the citizens to be more careful. After receiving a suspicious phone call, you should think for a while before taking any hasty decision, the police have repeatedly told you.
What is the matter?
A 59-year-old woman living in Dahisar East received a call on her mobile phone. It was pretended that a CBI officer was talking on the phone from the front. The 38-year-old son of the victim was arrested by the CBI officials at the office in Bandra. After hearing this information, the victim was shocked. What is the reason behind the arrest? When asked, the other person said, “Five months ago, her son went out of town with some friends for a party. There his friends raped and killed a woman. Her son is not involved in the crime. But because he was involved in saving his friends, he has been made a co-accused.”
The CBI official added, “We will share this news with the media shortly. If you want to stop the news from going to the media, you have to pay.” After hearing this, the sand shifted under the feet of the victim, the thieves also heard the crying of her son on the phone to make the woman believe. It was later discovered that the voice was created by Deepfake.
Hearing the child’s cry, the victim woman thought it was her own son. So she agreed to pay fake CBI people. But she also said that there is not much money in the bank. According to the thieves, the victim sent Rs 1.2 lakh to five different bank accounts. Even after that, the cyber thieves started demanding more money. So the victim called her son’s number and tried to know the facts.
After the victim phoned the boy, he found out that the boy was working in the office. The woman was relieved to know that he was not in CBI custody, but by then the cyber crooks had stolen lakhs of rupees. After this, the woman rushed to the Dahisar police station and reported the crime and filed a complaint.
