NEW DELHI: The central government on Wednesday moved a resolution condemning the Emergency in the Lok Sabha in a complete blow to the Congress, which alleged that the Constitution was under threat. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla moved the motion and asked members to observe a two-minute silence to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the anti-Emergency fight. The opposition raised slogans against the BJP after realizing that it had turned the tide by dropping ‘Google’. In the uproar, work was adjourned for the day.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, while congratulating Birla after being elected as Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second consecutive term, reminded him that he is responsible for protecting the Constitution. But after the congratulatory motion and the introduction of the Cabinet by the Prime Minister, it was Birla who suddenly moved a motion condemning the Emergency. “This is the 50th year since the dark days of the Emergency. The emergency destroyed the lives of many people in the country, many died. Let’s observe two minutes of silence in memory of the dutiful and patriotic citizens who lost their lives at the hands of the Congress dictatorial government,” Birla appealed. The members on the ruling benches stood stunned for two minutes. Earlier, in a motion lasting about 10 minutes, Birla strongly criticized the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Congress. This House strongly condemns the decision to impose Emergency on 25 June 1975. We appreciate the determination of all those who resisted Emergency, fought and shouldered the responsibility to protect India’s democracy, Birla said. “The decision was approved by the then cabinet after the imposition of emergency. “It is necessary to pass a resolution in Parliament to reiterate this second freedom, which was won after countless sacrifices,” Birla gave the reason behind the proposal. “India has always supported democratic values and debate. Indira Gandhi imposed dictatorship on such a country. “The democratic values of India have been crushed and freedom of expression has been strangled,” the Lok Sabha Speaker criticized.
BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the proposal. Confused Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed hope that the proposal should have been discussed. While congratulating the Lok Sabha Speaker, the opposition parties had hoped for a fair administration. However, the Lok Sabha Speaker raised an issue that was not discussed in the House and Tharoor criticized that it created a conflict.
Differences in ‘India’ are on the brink – BJP
The BJP criticized that the differences in the ‘India’ alliance have come to the fore due to the emergency protest motion brought by the Lok Sabha Speaker. While the proposal was being presented, the Congress members were standing in the open space and chanting slogans. But BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra claimed that Samajwadi Party, DMK, Trinamool members did not support him. Patra also says that the members of these parties in the ‘India’ alliance also stood up to pay tribute to those who lost their lives fighting the emergency, so the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also had to stand up.
Ruling MPs on the steps of Parliament
After the adjournment of the Lok Sabha, the MPs of the constituent parties of the BJP and the RLOA staged a protest on the steps of the Parliament, displaying placards protesting the Emergency. As the Emergency has completed 50 years, there is a need to inform people about it. BJP leaders say that the young generation will be aware of democracy and understand the importance of the constitution. This shows the strategy of the ruling party to respond to the issue of emergency while the opposition continues to try to embarrass the BJP and the central government over the constitution.
The Lok Sabha Speaker should have given an opportunity to discuss the issue of emergency in the House. After that, the House would have reached the conclusion, but before that, the Lok Sabha Speaker imposed the conclusion on the House.
