Supreme Court on CBI in Delhi Liquor Scam and Arvind Kejriwal Case: The Supreme Court has finally granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi liquor policy scam case. Today (Friday, September 13), the Supreme Court delivered its verdict. Kejriwal has been in jail for the past few months, but due to the Court’s decision, he is set to be released from Tihar Jail this evening. Kejriwal was granted bail on a bond of ₹10 lakh.
Kejriwal had filed a petition challenging the CBI’s arrest along with a bail application in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, a bench comprising Justice Suryakant and Justice Bhuinya granted bail. However, the judges had differing opinions regarding the legitimacy of Kejriwal’s arrest by the CBI. Justice Suryakant supported the arrest, while Justice Bhuinya raised concerns, particularly about the timing of the arrest. Justice Bhuinya questioned whether the arrest was made to obstruct Kejriwal’s potential bail, stating, “Was the arrest made after his bail by the Directorate of Extortion to prevent his release?”
“CBI must prove they are not caged parrots”
Justice Bhuinya emphasized that the CBI must prove they are not “parrots in a cage.” He urged the agency to ensure that no one is wrongfully arrested, as public perceptions can change the image of institutions. He added that the CBI should dispel the notion that they are controlled by external forces, much like Caesar’s wife, who must remain beyond suspicion.
Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI on charges of financial misappropriation related to the liquor policy scam. Following this, Kejriwal filed two separate petitions in the Supreme Court, challenging his arrest and seeking bail. The Supreme Court bench had reserved its judgment on the petitions during a hearing on September 5. Today, the Court granted bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
