Kolkata Doctor Case: Supreme Court Orders Removal of Victim’s Images from Social Media
The rape and subsequent gruesome murder of a female resident doctor at a medical college in Kolkata has shocked the nation. In response to the incident, widespread anger has emerged. During the Supreme Court hearing on this case, an important order was issued: all pictures of the victim must be removed from social media. The court emphasized that the identity of the rape victim must not be disclosed publicly. Following this order, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has directed social media platforms to comply with the Supreme Court’s mandate. The Ministry has instructed these platforms to delete any names, photos, and videos related to the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The IT Ministry clarified that social media platforms must adhere to the Supreme Court’s order by removing all related content. The Ministry warned that failure to comply could result in legal action. According to the court’s directive, protecting the privacy of the victim is paramount, and immediate action is required to enforce this order.
The Ministry has urged all social media companies to ensure that sensitive information related to the incident is not further disseminated. Non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s order will lead to legal consequences and additional actions.
