Supreme Court Channel Hacked: The Supreme Court’s YouTube channel suddenly started running ads on Friday afternoon. Some users reported that after clicking on the channel, they were redirected to a different YouTube channel. This has led to speculation that the Supreme Court’s YouTube channel has been hacked. Notably, just a day earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected a plea to refrain from broadcasting the hearing of the Kolkata trainee doctor rape and murder case, among other significant cases currently being heard.
What Exactly Happened?
On Friday afternoon, users on the official YouTube channel of the Supreme Court noticed that an advertisement from the American company Ripple Labs was running continuously. Ripple Labs is a US-based cryptocurrency facilitation company. Reports from ANI and Bar and Bench were shared on official social media accounts. Following this, some users experienced being directed to the wrong YouTube channel when clicking on the Supreme Court’s link.
Previous Videos Made Private?
Meanwhile, Bar and Bench reported that the previously recorded videos on this channel have also been privatized by hackers. Consequently, earlier videos on the Supreme Court’s YouTube channel are no longer accessible to the general audience.
Ripple Labs Also Affected by Hacking!
Additionally, Ripple Labs, whose advertisement was displayed on the hacked YouTube channels, has repeatedly informed YouTube about its distress regarding this situation. According to a Bar and Bench report, the company has also filed a petition against YouTube, expressing dissatisfaction that no action has been taken.
Reaction from a Supreme Court Official
The Indian Express reported the reaction of an anonymous Supreme Court official: “I have no idea what exactly happened. But there seems to be an issue with the security of our website. All this came to light on Friday morning. Following that, the IT department of the Supreme Court has started investigating, and it has also been reported to the National Informatics Center (NIC).”
