Some sources in the government informed on Thursday (June 27) that along with the Speaker, there will be a Deputy Speaker in the eighteenth Lok Sabha. “The auditorium will also have a vice-chairmanship. However, there is still no clarity on whether the post will be given to the opposition, whether the NDA will remain with the alliance or whether the BJP will keep the post for itself. This will be discussed”, said a source. The main opposition party Congress is demanding that the post of vice-president in the House should be given to the opposition.
The post of Vice President was vacant in the previous Lok Sabha
The post of Vice Speaker was kept vacant in the 17th Lok Sabha. In 2014, AIADMK member Thambi Durai was given the post of vice president. During the 10-year UPA rule from 2004 to 2014, the Congress had shown the gift of giving the post of vice president to the BJP. MP Charanjit Singh Atwal was appointed to this post in 2004 and Kariya Munda in 2009. At this time, it was expected that the TDP and JDU, which are the main cooperative parties of BJP’s NDA alliance, would demand this post. However, he has said that he does not want this post.
TDP is not interested in vice president post
Speaking to The Indian Express on Wednesday, TDP national spokesperson Pattabhi Ram Kommareddy said, “We have already made it clear that we do not expect this post.” On the other hand BJP has also said that they have not asked TDP for this post. Another senior TDP leader said, “From the beginning, TDP has not expressed its desire for the posts of Lok Sabha Speaker, as well as Deputy Speaker. If any other party in the NDA alliance is interested, we have opened the space for them.”
The opposition has no proposal yet
On the other hand, sources in the opposition said that the government has not yet held any talks with them regarding this post. If the government proposes to give the post to the opposition, some believe that the Congress will consider giving it to a party MP; On the other hand, some feel that the Congress should give this post to the other constituent parties of the India Alliance and increase the unity by increasing the positive atmosphere in the alliance.
Election for President
It was seen that the election for the post of Speaker was held in the Lok Sabha . Presumably the Speaker of the Lok Sabha is appointed by a coalition of the ruling party and the opposition. The President is appointed by consensus, avoiding elections. However, the election for this post has been held three times in history. After that, the election for the post of Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha has been held for the fourth time. In this election, the candidates from NDA were Om Birla; Congress MP from India Aghadi K. Suresh was the candidate. The election was held in the Lok Sabha on June 26 through voice voting. In that, Om Birla was once again elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Meira Kumar was the 15th Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 30 May 2009 to 4 June 2014. The 16th Speaker of the Lok Sabha was Sumitra Mahajan. Sumitra Mahajan served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha from June 6, 2014 to June 16, 2019. After that, Om Birla served as the 17th Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Now once again Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha.
