The incidents of online fraud are continuously increasing, with many cases involving fake OTPs being used to commit fraud. This often leads to significant financial losses for individuals. To address this issue and prevent further harm, major changes in OTP rules are likely to come into effect starting December 1.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is expected to make important decisions by introducing new measures to combat the misuse of fake OTPs sent to citizens. TRAI has begun preparations to implement stricter rules aimed at preventing consumer fraud and enhancing security. As a result, there might be delays in receiving OTP messages from December 1.
This change, initiated by TRAI, is likely to affect messaging services provided by telecom companies such as Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, and BSNL. However, this measure is part of a broader initiative to safeguard individuals from online fraud.
Will OTP Messages Stop?
OTP messages are sometimes exploited to drain people’s bank accounts or deduct money fraudulently. To address this, TRAI has instructed telecom companies to ensure message traceability. This means telecom companies will need to track where each message is generated. If telecom providers fail to implement this system or comply with the new rules, users may experience delays in receiving OTPs, or in some cases, OTP messages may stop altogether.
This initiative highlights TRAI’s focus on enhancing consumer protection and ensuring secure communication channels.
