Yamuna Water Controversy: Kejriwal Challenges Opposition Leaders to Drink Yamuna Water
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal has challenged Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, as well as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, to publicly drink Yamuna water. He issued this challenge in response to allegations that the river’s water is being poisoned in the neighboring state of Haryana.
With just a week left for the Delhi Assembly elections, Kejriwal, in an interview with India Today, claimed that the ammonia level in the Yamuna River in Delhi has risen to a dangerous level of 7 parts per million (PPM).
Kejriwal further stated that 7 PPM ammonia is like ‘poison’. He accused the BJP-led Haryana government of polluting the Yamuna River, putting the lives of Delhi’s residents at risk. Supporting Kejriwal’s claim, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj also challenged the opposition to drink Yamuna water.
Kejriwal said, “My challenge to Amit Shah, Rajiv Kumar, Rahul Gandhi, and Sandeep Dixit is this—drink water containing 7 PPM ammonia in front of the media. You are the ones sending this contaminated water to Delhi, yet you accuse me of lying.”
When asked for evidence regarding his claim, he responded, “Then who is responsible for the pollution of the Yamuna? Because the water is coming from Panipat.”
BJP’s Counterattack on Kejriwal’s Allegations
After Kejriwal’s accusations against the Haryana government at an election rally, the BJP responded strongly. Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini not only denied the allegations but also threatened to file a case against Kejriwal, demanding an apology.
Rahul Gandhi Also Criticizes Kejriwal
Like the BJP, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also targeted Kejriwal. “Like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kejriwal also lies. Five years ago, Kejriwal said he would bathe in the Yamuna and drink its water. It has been five years, and he still hasn’t done it. The people of Delhi drink dirty water, but Kejriwal drinks clean water while sitting in his crore-worth Sheesh Mahal,” Rahul Gandhi criticized.
